Common IELTS speaking mistakes and how to avoid them

I know how the IELTS speaking test can feel tricky for students. The problem is not always a lack of language skills. Common IELTS speaking mistakes include memorising answers by heart or giving short answers. These mistakes can lower the mark.

I have seen students make this mistake of learning answers to questions. IELTS examiners can easily spot responses. That spotting can hurt the fluency and coherence score. The IELTS speaking test can avoid this error if you practice answering speaking topics.

I have also noticed this error when students give brief answers. In part 1 of the IELTS speaking test, one-word responses do not show language proficiency. It is better to give elaborated answers.

I understand why students stop speaking in part 2 of the IELTS speaking test. Many students struggle to speak for two minutes and stop before the time is up. That happens because students do not use cue card prompts to guide their speaking.

I remember that fluency is more important than speed during the IELTS speaking test. Speaking quickly does not always mean speaking. Errors such as using fillers like "um" or pauses before answering hurt the score.

I suggest cutting down pauses by regular speaking practice. In that practice the student talks on topics.

I recommend recording speaking samples. After recording, edit them if needed.

I think recording with a tutor is very helpful. The tutor can spot patterns. Help you improve.

At the IELTS hub we believe that regular practice is the way to prepare for the IELTS exam.

Our speaking sessions are designed to improve candidates’ fluency and confidence during the IELTS speaking part.
